Wilderness is so great at Cap-Ferret! I would advise you to walk, that's the better way to discover hidden treasures. Nevertheless, I give you some landmarks where it would be a pity not to go... :-)
Natural places:
- La Pointe : this is the end of the peninsula, from where you will have a very nice view on the Pyla sand dune and the bay passes. That's a unique place
La plage océane : kilometres of sand dunes...with some remains of the second world war. Walk along the shore to discover it.
Le Mimbeau : a small peninsula on the bay side which has taken its name from a sailor whose ship was wrecked during nineteenth century. A nice place to swim during summer and a beautiful view on the bay side of Cap-Ferret.
La réserve de Piraillan: drive to the north of the peninsula and some kilometres away from Cap-Ferret, you will find Piraillan natural reserve, where you will find numerous birds, and where you will be able to go for long walks in the nearby woods.
"Monuments" :
- Le Bélisaire: if you arrive by boat from Arcachon, you will arrive there. A nice view on the peninsula...
- Notre Dame des Flots: the modern church of Cap-Ferret...It's up to you to judge if you like it...
- The Lighthouse: destroyed during the second world war, it has been re-built in 1947. One of the places you cannot miss. The only little thing you will have to do is to climb the 53 metres (about 160 ft) to reach the top!
- La Vigne: When you leave Cap-Ferret you can choose two ways, the road along the sand dunes or La Vigne road. Choose the second possibilty and discover beautiful houses and a nice harbour...
- l'Herbe chapel : A chapel where you should go. Even if the architecture and its decoration is muslim-like, it is a catholic church. It has been built by a local builder, Leon Lesca, in rememberance of his days spent in Algeria.
